Ian Rush sends heartfelt message to Liverpool FC legend Kevin Keegan after cancer diagnosis

Ian Rush has sent a heartfelt message to legendary former Reds player, Kevin Keegan. In a statement released yesterday, the Keegan family revealed the 74-year-old has been diagnosed with cancer.

The family statement said: "Kevin was recently admitted to hospital for further evaluation of ongoing abdominal symptoms. These investigations have revealed a diagnosis of cancer, for which Kevin will undergo treatment. Kevin is grateful to the medical team for their intervention and ongoing care. During this time, the family are requesting privacy, and will be making no further comment."

Rush, who joined Liverpool three years after Keegan's departure, shared Liverpool Football Club's tribute to his own social media account. He added: "We're all with you, hoping for a full and speedy recovery", alongside a prayer emoji.

Liverpool Football Club's tribute said: "The thoughts and support of everyone at Liverpool FC and Forever Reds are with Kevin Keegan after he was diagnosed with cancer."

Keegan had a spectacular stint at Liverpool, scoring 100 goals in 323 appearances during a six-year spell the club, with his honours including three league titles, a European Cup, two UEFA Cups and an FA Cup.

Keegan's playing career also saw him represent Scunthorpe United, Hamburg, Southampton and Newcastle United. Keegan was twice named European Footballer of the Year while at Hamburg and returned to England to play for Southampton and Newcastle before retiring as a player in 1984.

In his management career he took charge of Newcastle twice and also managed Fulham, England and Manchester City.

He helped the Magpies secure promotion from the Second Division in his second season, Newcastle fans know him as "King Kev".

A statement released by the club after the sad news said: "Our former player & manager, Kevin Keegan will undergo treatment after being diagnosed with cancer having been admitted to hospital for further evaluation of ongoing abdominal symptoms. King Kev we're with you every step of the way. Hoping for a full and speedy recovery."

Well wishes have been sent to the much-loved sportsman. On X, Jamie Carragher responded to Liverpool's tribute with a red love heart emoji. Other comments included: "Sending strength and love to Kevin Keegan and his family. Stay strong, legend" and "Sending very best wishes to this lovely man and total football legend."

Further responses were: "Stay strong, legend! Sending you best wishes from Hamburg" and "Really hope he beats this, sending positive vibes to Keegan and his family during tough times."
