Liverpool have been linked with a number of new defenders as they look to bolster their position for the coming seasons

Liverpool target Dayot Upamecano has reportedly accepted a fresh salary offer from Champions League rivals Bayern Munich with ‘an agreement in place’ for nearly all clauses in a fresh contract at the Bundesliga giants.

The Frenchman is one of several top centre-backs across Europe who are in the final months of their respective deals.

Ibrahima Konate is currently set to leave Liverpool this summer as his contract runs out while Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace is being eyed the Reds along with a number of top clubs as his deal at Selhurst Park ticks down.

Just a couple of weeks ago, German outlet TZ reported that Upamecano had been ‘offered’ to Liverpool by the player’s representatives. Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked with the defender.

Bayern, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, made the ‘best’ wage offer to the player and said an agreement is now in place for much of the contract. The only hurdle to overcome for the German club is to agree on a release clause.

“Well, now, Bayern proposal in terms of fixed salary and bonuses has been accepted by Upamecano and his agents. So, there is an agreement between Bayern and Upamecano on the structure of the contract, on the salary, on the bonuses, on the length of the contract.

“What's being discussed now is the exit clause, release clause for Upamecano to be included in the agreement. “Obviously, Bayern don't want to guarantee anything for this summer 2026.

“They only want to eventually accept the release clause valid from 2027 or 2028, so longer in terms of timing. Let's see what Upamecano will counter to this opportunity offered by Bayern.”

With Bayern willing to allow a release clause at some point in the contract, Liverpool’s hopes of signing the player on a free transfer in the summer look incredibly slim.

Upamecano is free to speak to clubs outside of Germany about a pre-contract agreement but with talks at a very advanced stage with Bayern, they now appear unlikely. Liverpool need to think long-term about their centre-back position amid uncertainty over Konate’s future while Virgil van Dijk is out of contract in 2027.
