Liverpool’s January transfer window has been anything but straightforward, with the Reds facing competition for preferred targets. Having already missed out on Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo, who is set to complete £65 million move to Manchester City after undergoing medical examinations this week, Arne Slot’s side could face further disappointment as Manchester City ramp up their interest in Marc Guehi.
City are preparing a £35 million bid for the Crystal Palace captain following defensive injuries to Rúben Dias and Josko Gvardiol, with Liverpool internally believing a January deal will be difficult to complete.
Against this backdrop of transfer frustration, reports from Italy have claimed that AC Milan have now made fresh contact with Liverpool regarding defender Joe Gomez. According to CalcioMercato, Milan sporting director Igli Tare has renewed discussions with Liverpool over the 28-year-old England international as the Italian giants continue their search for defensive reinforcements ahead of the transfer deadline.
This isn’t Milan’s first attempt to secure Gomez’s signature. The Rossoneri came close to agreeing a £13 million deal for the Liverpool defender during the final days of the summer transfer window, but the move collapsed when Liverpool’s proposed signing of Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace fell through at the eleventh hour. With Giovanni Leoni sidelined for the remainder of the campaign after suffering an ACL tear on his Liverpool debut, losing Gomez without a replacement would leave Slot’s defensive options dangerously thin.
Milan are monitoring the situation and hope Gomez himself could help facilitate a move, but signals from England remain limited. The Italian club are also assessing alternative options, including Chelsea outcast Axel Disasi and Nottingham Forest’s Murillo.
Gomez has endured yet another injury-plagued season at Anfield, suffering a hamstring problem in December that kept him out of action for several weeks. The defender only recently returned to training and made his comeback against Fulham in early January. Throughout his 11 seasons on Merseyside, persistent injuries have prevented Gomez from establishing himself as a consistent starter.
