Arsenal were forced to turn the comments off on social media after a "vile" response to their new signing Smilla Holmberg.

The Gunners, who are currently third in the Women's Super League, splashed the cash on the Swedish defender, 19, on Monday. Holmberg is already a star in her native country, racking up 96 appearances at Hammarby with two cups and a league title.

“Hey Gooners. I’m at the Emirates and I can’t wait to get started. Come on you Gunners," the teenager said on a video shared on Arsenal's Instagram. However, the page had to turn off the comments after she received sexist abuse.

According to The Sun, Arsenal work with data science company Signify Group. The Gunners have made use of its specialist Threat Matrix service to support their efforts in combating targeted online abuse.

And the service picked up on the comments, leading to the comments of the video being turned off. However, other posts of Holmberg's signing remains with their comments on, with fans expressing their excitement of the signing.

Speaking to Arsenal's in-house media, Holmberg admitted she had realised a career “dream” by signing for the Gunners.
