Liverpool are falling behind in the race to sign long-term target Marc Guehi after a deal collapsed in the summer

The bombshell update that City are now ‘negotiating with Crystal Palace for Guehi’ has come from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. Guehi is out of contract with Palace this summer and it is widely believed he will not pen fresh terms at the club.

Now City are leading the chase as they look for reinforcements after suffering a number of injury problems. Fabrizio Romano said on his YouTube channel: “Man City are in an emergency and Oliver Glasner has said, well, if we receive a good financial proposal and if the player wants to go, yes, Guehi could leave the club in January.

“So the doors are not closed to a January exit for Guehi. Man City are on it, Man City are negotiating with Crystal Palace for Guehi but it's not something done, it's not something agreed.

“Don't forget about Bayern calls, don't forget about Liverpool calls, the situation is moving around - because Bayern and Liverpool are tracking this opportunity for the summer transfer window.”

Liverpool are said to feel doing a deal in January would be difficult. After seeing their agreement with Palace collapse in the summer, Liverpool were ready to wait to sign Guehi as a free agent when his contract ran out in June.

Now the immediate interest from City could force their hand, as they could well miss out on the player if they fail to act.

Romano continued: “Liverpool internally believe that it's going to be difficult to do the deal in January, but never say never, I would keep everything open on this story, because Liverpool had the player in their hands in the summer transfer window, then we know the deal collapsed.

“Liverpool remain interested, Bayern are still there, Man City want to do the deal now, prepare to pay a transfer fee to Palace, so let's follow this Guehi situation.”
