FC Koln vice-president Ulf Sobek has explained why even a €50m offer from the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur wouldn’t be enough for Said El-Mala this month.
Express have an interview with the Koln chief this week as they return to training ahead of the Bundesliga’s return from the winter break.
He was asked about their potential transfer business, including a departure for El Mala. The winger has been the undisputed breakout star of the Bundesliga this season.
He’s taken the step up to Germany’s top flight comfortably, with a series of impressive performances to his name already and six goals and three assist in 15 league as well.
That’s led to plenty of interest in the 19-year-old. Brighton tried to sign him in the summer, while Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham are all speaking to his agent.
The player, for his part, has ruled out a move for now. He’s insisted that he wants to remain where he is and continue developing. A big bid from the Premier League could always change that stance, as it has done in the past.
Said El-Mala price goes beyond €50m

COLOGNE, GERMANY – 28 SEPTEMBER, 2025: Said El Mala – The football match of Bundesliga 1.FC Koln vs VfB Stuttgart at Rhein Energie Stadion.
Sobek, though, insists that Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham or any other suitors couldn’t even tempt them with €50m for Said El Mala.
“First, you have to find the right time for such a transfer,” he said.
“If we were to sell him now for €50 million, we’d have to pay a significant amount in taxes. So, it’s not always just about the absolute value; you always have to think ahead. What’s important is the bottom line for us when you want to cash in on a gem.
“Ideally, though, I’d like Said to stay with us for a long time and bring us a lot of joy. If a player is worth €50m, he wants a corresponding salary. Then you have to look at the club’s salary structure.”
