Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior says ex-Celtic boss ‘really affected’ him in first interview

Celtic aren’t the only club to have had a high-profile sacking this week.

The news of Wilfried Nancy’s departure was accompanied by the departures of Ruben Amorim and Enzo Maresca at Manchester United and Chelsea respectively.

Maresca was once, of course, a top target for the Celtic hierarchy, speaking to the club on a number of occasions whilst on the books at Manchester City.

The Italian departed Chelsea amid internal disputes, eerily reminiscent of how Brendan Rodgers left Celtic in October.

And his surprise replacement, Liam Rosenior, evidenced that Rodgers’ impact is still being felt at Chelsea, over 15 years later.

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior on ex-Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers

Rodgers worked his way up to be part of Jose Mourinho’s backroom staff at Stamford Bridge before venturing into his own management career.

His first role was at Watford, where he was a success before jumping ship to Reading, where he worked with Rosenior.

And Rosenior, speaking to the Chelsea website for the first time as Blues manager, cited him as an influence on his way of thinking.

Asked about his role models, he said: “Well, he would kill me if I didn’t say my dad! Obviously, your dad is your role model.

“My dad, when I was 15 or 16 years old, he managed Torquay United and got them promoted from League Two playing a style of football that I believe in.’

“Brendan Rodgers, who was here at Chelsea, really affected my way of thinking when I was a player at Reading.

“I’ve had really top coaches – Chris Hughton’s humility – and there are so many different influences.

“Coaching isn’t just about football; it is about people, understanding people and trying to get the best out of them. That’s what I want to do here.”

41-year-old Rosenior has previously managed Derby County, Hull City and BlueCo-owned Strasbourg.
