Liverpool’s hopes of landing Borussia Dortmund centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck have suffered a significant setback.
The Reds have been closely monitoring Schlotterbeck for months as Arne Slot seeks defensive reinforcements, particularly with uncertainty lingering over the long-term futures of Ibrahima Konate. Liverpool have held positive talks with the 26-year-old’s representatives as DaveOCKOP.com exclusively revealed in October last year.
Crucially, Schlotterbeck continues to stall over signing a new contract at Dortmund, with his current deal set to expire in the summer of 2027. Despite BVB offering improved terms worth approximately €8 million per year until 2030, the Germany international appears unconvinced about the club’s ambitions and ability to compete for major honours.
His reluctance to commit long-term has placed BVB in a precarious position: either cash in during the summer transfer window or risk losing him on a free transfer in 2027. As a result, he could be on the move in the upcoming summer transfer window, with BILD now reporting that Real Madrid are showing serious interest now – a blow to Liverpool’s aspirations for the German international.
BILD report: “The hottest candidate for a transfer is said to be Real Madrid. The Whites are looking for a new defensive boss and need a replacement for a possible separation from central defender Antonio Rüdiger.”
“The problem: Preferred candidate Upamecano will probably stay in Munich after all. This means that Schlotterbeck is back in the spotlight in Madrid, and a move is becoming more likely. However, Dortmund is calling for a high sum for the German international. There will be no transfer fee of less than 50 million euros in the summer.”
Bayern Munich are also credited with a transfer for the German international, despite agreeing a new contract with Dayot Upamecano.
