Man City look set to secure the signing of Antoine Semenyo, but could another Premier League star be about to follow him to The Etihad?

Compared to the summer transfer window, the January one has been relatively tranquil so far with Man City edging out in front.

The signing of Antoine Semenyo didn’t quite come out of nowhere, however, Liverpool and Arsenal were long thought to be the favourites to land the Ghana international, who has been one of the Premier League’s players of the season.

With Pep Guardiola wanting more goals from his wide players, signing the 25-year old suddenly made a lot more sense and City moved the quickest. Circumstances have again dictated that another player who looked like he was on his way to Anfield could also be heading to The Etihad.

Man City up Marc Guehi transfer interest

Fabrizio Romano is a busy man as football’s transfer guru and the Italian journalist has had his finger on the pulse with Semenyo’s move to City. He has also been leading the reports on City’s interest in Marc Guehi with Guardiola’s growing injury list and future plans dictating that the Crystal Palace skipper’s name has just been bumped up the shopping list.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: "So, City want to sign a centre-back in January, City want to do something to help Pep Guardiola, Marc Guehi is a target, but don't forget that there are Liverpool and Bayern involved in the race over a potential free deal for the summer transfer window.

"So let's see if Liverpool could consider to anticipate the deal in January or not, to try. There is still no official bid to Palace, but for sure Liverpool are still in conversation with the agents, and same for Bayern. Man City will try to make it happen now, let's see if it's going to be possible with the player and with Steve Parish, the chairman of Crystal Palace."

Who are favourites to sign Marc Guehi?

Liverpool will back themselves in any fight for Guehi given that the agreed terms with the England centre-half in the summer and completed a medical. Despite the transfer window shutting, there would have been a constant chain of communication between the club and the player’s representatives such is the nature of the modern game.

Arne Slot has said that he doesn’t need a centre-half and yet they tried to sign Guehi on deadline day in the summer, the interest will still be there.

Guardiola though, is desperate for a centre-half given John Stones inability to stay fit and contract running out in the summer with Josko Gvardiol’s broken leg and Ruben Dias being out injured for the foreseeable future too. Guehi wouldn’t be a signing for the short-term though, with Guehi being an obvious replacement for Stones given their respective home-grown status.

The Crystal Palace skipper rarely misses a game and is as low risk as signings come, even if City have to pay the £35m fee that Liverpool agreed in the summer. A player is only worth what a club is willing to pay, and Guehi is worth every penny of that fee.
