Liverpool are a just over a week into the January transfer window but the club are still holding their cards close to their chest. Many fans had thought the club would address a current shortage in both attacking and defensive areas this winter, but that has yet to come to fruition.

The Reds' hesitation in the market so far could be linked to the significant outlay they made in the summer on the likes of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak. One transfer that failed to get off the ground in the summer, however, was a move for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.

The Reds agreed a £35million deal for Guehi on deadline day in September only for Crystal Palace to pull the plug at the last minute. It's believed that Liverpool remain interested in the England international and are among a number of clubs planning a pitch to the player when his contract at Selhurst Park expires at the end of the season.

However, today's Liverpool news sees Arne Slot set out the club's stall for the winter window while Palace boss Oliver Glasner lays out the terms for Guehi to leave the club.

Slot makes transfer window claim

Slot has claimed that he is "really happy" with his squad and hinted that Liverpool may not move for Palace's Guehi in the current transfer window.

"I never talk about transfers in public, let alone talking about a transfer from another club," the Reds boss said on Wednesday, ahead of Liverpool's clash with Arsenal on Thursday night. "My answer is always the same. We don’t talk about players that are not ours.

"I am really happy with the squad we have. All the decisions made last summer and the summer before are completely aligned with me, Richard (Hughes) and the ownership. This season has shown how talented this group is and if everyone is available how good a team we can be."

Slot added: "There is nothing, nothing, nothing positive from players being injured but maybe if I can think about the narrative that we have spent so much money and every time I say, 'no, we replaced and spent a little bit more than came in', and no-one wanted to hear it.

"This club is in a very good place if everyone is available - and we are getting stronger and stronger - for the short-term future but definitely also for the mid to long-term future."

Marc Guehi terms set

Palace boss Oliver Glasner has admitted that Guehi could be sold this month at the right price. The Eagles boss stated that if a major offer is to come in for his prized centre-back then the player will move on, despite Guehi being available on a free transfer come the summer.

The Palace chief also revealed that Manchester City are interested in signing Guehi. The Citizens are already looking likely to sign Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo from the grasp of several interested Premier League clubs, reportedly including Liverpool.

"Everybody wants that he plays for Crystal Palace, signs a new contract and stays here for ever," Glasner said of Guehi.

He added: "On the other side, there’s the situation that the contract ends in the summer, and if somebody is coming, there will be a moment when the club says: ‘Now the financial issue is more important than the sport issue.’ We have to do it and try to get the best. That’s why I’m always saying: ‘I don’t know.’ Because this is different.

"There will be a threshold where the club has to say [sell] … If the player says: ‘I want to leave’ and the money is above the threshold, it will happen. I’m not so naïve not to know that if a massive offer comes from City and Marc wants to do it, it will happen."

Guehi is expected to have offers from abroad, with Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid among the clubs credited with interest. Liverpool currently have Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate as their only fit senior centre-half pairing with Joe Gomez and Geovani Leoni ruled out through injury.
