AC Milan have been linked with an out-of-favour Liverpool star

Serie A title hopefuls AC Milan have emerged as contenders to sign Liverpool defender Joe Gomez in the January transfer window, according to a report in Italy.

CalcioMercato states that serial-winner Massimo Allegri is happy with the strides his team has made in his first six months back at the San Siro, but adds that the Rossoneri coach is keen to bring in a central defender to bolster his side’s backline and boost their hopes of Scudetto success.

Gomez is described by the outlet as a ‘desirable target’ due to his experience at Liverpool and his technical and athletic qualities. He’s a two-time Premier League winner and a one-time Champions League winner while he’s also represented England on 15 occasions which are all factors which could appeal to the San Siro outfit.

AC Milan plot move for Gomez

AC Milan currently have one of the best defensive records in Serie A after conceding 13 times in their opening 17 matches. Only AS Roma and surprise package Como FC have stronger records at the back at this point of the campaign.

They sit second in the table and are only four points behind rivals Inter with a game in hand as they aim to lift the title for the first time in four years.

However, they are still in the market for further defensive options after the sales of Malick Thiaw to Newcastle United and Pierre Kalulu to Juventus over the summer. They also opted against making Kyle Walker’s move from Manchester City permanent following an unsuccessful loan stint towards the end of last season.

Gomez is primarily a central defender but also someone that could provide an option in various other areas of defence having played full-back for large periods of his career as well.

The England international has 18 months to run on his Liverpool contract and his existing deal is due to expire in 2027. He’s currently seen as third choice in central defence for the Reds and has played 13 times across all competitions, including nine times in the league.

AC Milan also linked with Liverpool transfer target

AC Milan are weighing up moves for several Premier League defenders, including Nottingham Forest star Murillo, who in the past has been linked with a move to Liverpool.

The Rossoneri sporting director Tare is very interested in the Brazilian defender, although no further negotiations have been made, according to reports in Italy.

Murillo has been mentioned as a potential option for Liverpool in the past, with a £68m price tag being touted in 2025. The Brazil central defender notably formed part of the Forest backline which qualified for Europe by finishing seventh in the table last season to end a near 30-year-hiatus from football on the continent.

He formed a strong partnership with Nikola Milenkovic last term which for a period was one of the best in the division as the Tricky Trees won plaudits for their defensive organisation.
