Arsenal enter race for Liverpool target

Liverpool are preparing for Thursday’s Premier League clash against Arsenal, aiming to claim all three points away at the league leaders in north London.

Off the pitch, the Reds continue to be linked with Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi. Liverpool had a £35m bid plus add-ons accepted for the England defender last summer but failed to complete the deal before the deadline.

With Guehi’s contract expiring in June, several top European clubs are now monitoring his situation. “Honestly I don’t know what will happen,” Palace boss Oliver Glasner said about Guehi this week.

“If you’re just valuing sports, everyone in the club will say Marc has to stay. The chairman will tell you the same. But it’s not one-dimensional.

“Nothing in life is one-dimensional. So if you see the financial situation, it’s very important. Everybody wants him to play for Crystal Palace, sign a new contract and stay here forever.

“That’s what everybody will tell you. On the other side, there’s the situation that the contract ends in summer and if somebody is coming, there will be a moment when the club says, now the financial issue is more important than the sport issue. I’m not so naive not to know that if a massive offer comes from City and Marc wants to do it, it will happen.”

According to the Mirror, Arsenal are ready to join the race for Guehi. Manchester City are currently favourites to sign the Crystal Palace captain this month.

However, the Gunners, along with Liverpool and Bayern Munich, have shown interest in the 25-year-old, whose contract expires this summer.

Arsenal previously targeted Guehi last summer but opted for Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie instead. Should Guehi stay at Palace until his contract ends, top European clubs are expected to pursue him.

Mikel Arteta’s side could see him as a valuable free transfer due to his versatility, even with a strong defensive pairing of William Saliba and Gabriel in place.

Arsenal demonstrated their ambition last summer, with sporting director Andrea Berta driving their transfer strategy. Signing one of England’s top defenders on a free transfer would be a major coup, and one the club are likely keen to pursue.
