Oliver Glasner issues fresh update on Marc Guehi future

With the first major transfer of the January window already confirmed, attention now turns to Marc Guehi. Liverpool had been linked with a move for Antoine Semenyo, but the Bournemouth winger is set to join Manchester City.

Crystal Palace skipper Guehi came incredibly close to signing for the defending Premier League champions on deadline day in September.

A £35m deal had been agreed between the clubs, and Guehi even underwent a medical. However, Palace pulled the plug after their attempts to secure a replacement for the defender fell through.

With the 25-year-old unwilling to sign a new deal at Selhurst Park, it has long been expected that he would leave on a free transfer in the summer.

Liverpool remain keen to sign Guehi and are among several clubs preparing a bid when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The situation, however, may have shifted. Manchester City, one of the potential suitors, are currently dealing with a centre-back injury crisis. Meanwhile, Palace manager Oliver Glasner acknowledged on Tuesday that Guehi could be sold this month if the price is right.

Arsenal have also entered the race for the England international. When asked about the possibility of losing Guehi following Palace’s goalless draw against Aston Villa, Glasner expressed confidence that the defender would remain at the club during the January transfer window.

Glasner told Sky Sports: “I think Marc will stay but if Marc says ‘I want to leave’, and a club pays massive money – with five months left of a contract – every player will leave if you’re playing for a club like Crystal Palace.

“I’m pretty sure our chairman will ask for a very high price for him and then let’s see. I don’t know if Marc wants to leave.”

He added: “No more worried than in the summer because the summer would’ve been the same. If the offer would have been high enough that the club is fine with it and if Marc wanted to go, he wouldn’t be a Crystal Palace player anymore.

“I think last January would’ve been the same and the year before would be the same. Every single player has a price where the club will sell him when you’re Crystal Palace and maybe because we’re not the end of the food chain in football.

“For me it was a little bit surprising what was made out of it, because it’s the exactly same situation as it was in the summer.

“Right now, when I see him playing, when I see him training, when I see his commitment and when we are talking quite often together, then I think the fans can be really be calm but you never know what will happen in football.”
