David Ornstein delivers Marc Guehi to Liverpool update after Arsenal interest emerges

Liverpool might regret not signing Marc Guehi in the 2025 summer transfer window when they had a clear run at the player.

The Reds saw a £35m offer for Guehi turned down last year, but opted against pushing to try and get a deal done after that.

The stopper is now in the final six months of his Crystal Palace contract, and with the January transfer window open, other clubs have begun to circle.

Manchester City have been linked to Guehi in the last week amid their move for another Liverpool target, Antoine Semenyo.

Now, on January 8, Arsenal have joined the race for the talented centre-back, with it reported that it may take Premier League clubs £40m to get a deal done.

Liverpool won’t sign Marc Guehi in January

After the initial news of the Gunners’ interest broke, David Ornstein has now shared an update on the situation.

And it’s bad news for any Liverpool fans who want to see Guehi brought to Anfield in the next few weeks.

As a result, it seems as though Manchester City are the only Premier League club looking to do a deal for the England international in the 2026 winter transfer window.

City have issues at centre-back this season, so a potential move does make a lot of sense on their end.

But it also means that Liverpool could miss out on a second target to the Sky Blues after Semenyo.

Will Liverpool actually sign a centre-back in January

At present, the Reds are short of senior, natural centre-back options, with Joe Gomez having to provide cover for Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk.

Yet, with over a week of the window down, it doesn’t appear as though Liverpool are close to moving for a first-team defender.

It’s been reported that the January transfer window will be quiet at Anfield, and so far, that has proven to be the case.

A mistake? Perhaps, but Liverpool are already out of the title race, and it looks as though FSG are more than happy to sit on their hands and see how this season plays out.
