Manchester United sacked head coach Ruben Amorim on Monday, appointing former midfielder Darren Fletcher as a caretaker manager for the remainder of the season.

Fletcher took charge of Wednesday’s Premier League match against Burnley and will remain in place until a caretaker is named, with a permanent appointment planned for the summer.

Amorim’s exit follows a strained relationship with club officials, including a hostile meeting with sporting director Jason Wilcox on Friday. After Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Leeds, the Portuguese coach publicly questioned the club’s structure and hinted at an early departure.

Less than 24 hours later, United confirmed Amorim had left his role after 14 months in charge. “With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change,” United said.

“This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish. The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.”

Amorim won 25 of his 63 games in charge of the Red Devils, with his 14-month stint marking the shortest reign of a permanent Manchester United manager since David Moyes was dismissed just eight months into his tenure in 2014.

Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher is currently the club’s under-18s head coach and previously served as technical director between 2021 and 2024, but he has never held a senior managerial role.

The 41-year-old former Scotland international represented United between 2002 and 2015, winning five Premier League titles and the 2007-08 Champions League.

Amorim’s coaching staff also departed the club, including former Liverpool man Paulo Barreira, who served as physical performance coach.

Barreira previously worked as a physiotherapist at Liverpool from 2011 to 2014 and has also held roles at Arsenal, Sporting CP and several clubs in the Middle East.
