Arsenal missed the chance to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League, as they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Liverpool on Thursday night.

The Gunners, who had won their previous five league matches, came into the clash with a golden opportunity to go eight points clear after title rivals Manchester City and Aston Villa both drew on Wednesday.

Liverpool, last season’s champions, arrived on the back of a nine-match unbeaten run in all competitions but were without Hugo Ekitike. This forced manager Arne Slot to name a starting line-up without a recognised striker.

The Gunners dominated the first half, creating numerous opportunities, but it was Liverpool who had the clearest chance when Conor Bradley capitalised on a mix-up between David Raya and William Saliba, sending a delicate chipped effort against the crossbar.

Arsenal repeatedly delivered crosses into the box, but there was no one to apply a decisive finishing touch. Liverpool grew into the game in the second half and looked the more dangerous side going forward, yet neither team could break the deadlock.

Liverpool failed to register a single shot on target in the game. It was the first time they had done so in a Premier League match since facing Wigan Athletic on 8 March 2010.

The result leaves Arsenal at the top of the table, six points ahead of their nearest challengers, while Liverpool remain fourth; however, the Reds were dealt a massive injury blow.

Conor Bradley was forced off with an injury late in the game and was replaced by Joe Gomez. Bradley went down while attempting to clear a loose ball on the right-hand side, clutching the turf in visible pain.
