Liverpool are closing in on the signing of a young defender with a verbal agreement reportedly reached

Liverpool have reached a verbal agreement to sign 18-year-old centre-back Mor Ndiaye, it has been reported.

The Reds need to consider their long-term options in central defence with Ibrahima Konate out of contract this summer while Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both have just 18 months left on their respective deals on Merseyside.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Reds are now close to a deal to add somebody to their younger ranks. He said on X: “Liverpool reach verbal agreement to sign left-sided CB Mor Ndiaye.

“Senegal defender has played at the recent U17 World Cup in Qatar; deal follows the signing of Ifeane Ndukwe from Austria Wien sealed last week. Here we go.”

Ndiaye would not be straight into the senior squad given his age and current level of experience. He plays for the Senegalese second-tier side Amitie FC, who are owned by former Newcastle United and Chelsea forward Demba Ba.

The left-sided centre-back played all four games for Senegal at the U17 World Cup. Slot has a lack of senior options too, with Wellity Lucky named in a number of matchday squads lately.

Giovanni Leoni is out for the season because of an ACL injury that he suffered on his debut while Gomez has had some injury problems this campaign.

Liverpool did make an attempt to sign Marc Guehi in the summer but the deal collapsed at the 11th hour as Crystal Palace went back in the agreement as they could not sign a suitable replacement.

Liverpool and Bayern Munich had been ready to wait in the hopes of signing him on a free transfer in the summer but City’s desire to bring the player to the Etihad Stadium could see a scramble for his services before the window shuts.

Getting a youngster like Ndiaye on board will allow some of the club’s more established younger players step into the first team when needed or Ndiaye himself could get a chance to impress if he settles quickly on Merseyside.
