Jamie Carragher delivers verdict on Liverpool's point at Arsenal and how the Reds could have won

Liverpool got what they came for on Thursday after leaving the Emirates Stadium with a point.

Fear had engulfed Reds’ supporters at the prospect of a visit to league leaders Arsenal, but their team delivered one of their better performances of the season.

Had there been a winner during Thursday night’s match, it would likely have been Liverpool, but without Hugo Ekitike, Alexander Isak or Mohamed Salah, the Reds were far too blunt in attack.

Much better from the Reds today!

Nevertheless, Arne Slot deserves credit for getting more out of his players, and the task now for Liverpool is to build on the display.

The Reds’ good performance shocked Gary Neville, but given the night off by Sky Sports, his partner in crime Jamie Carragher took to X to deliver his own verdict on whether it was a point gained or two dropped for Slot and his team.

Jamie Carragher happy with Liverpool’s point

In an ideal world, Liverpool would obviously have found a way to turn their second-half dominance into a goal on Thursday.

But a point at the Emirates is never a bad thing. Liverpool drew the same fixture last season, of course, although the circumstances were very different.

In Carragher’s book, it was a good result and – more importantly – a better performance, which according to the Liverpool legend, could have been even better if the Reds had a ‘top attacker’ on the pitch.

“A good result & a very good performance from Liverpool tonight, missing three top attackers that may have made it an excellent result!” he said.

“Nine unbeaten is not to be sniffed at after losing 9/12 previously.”

Carragher hits back at suggestions of Liverpool cowardice

There will no doubt still be Liverpool supporters who were frustrated by Thursday’s match. For all their better play, the Reds did not carry much of an attacking threat.

This was pointed out by Arsenal journalist Tim Stillman following the game, as he claimed that Liverpool ‘don’t take enough risks’ with the ball.

Taking exception to the reporter’s comments, Carragher hit back, making a valid point about Arsenal’s similarly dull tactics.

“Arsenal have not taken any risk in 180mins v Liverpool this season!!!” he said, exasperated.

Having watched Arsenal fail to score against a brittle Liverpool team across two matches this term, it is clear that the Gunners will be one of the dullest teams to ever win the Premier League should they get over the line. As for Liverpool, hopefully this can be the first building block to an improved second half of the campaign.
