Ibrahima Konate takes “step in the right direction” in rare win for Liverpool’s defence

Alisson took the acclaim as Liverpool’s standout figure in their spirited 0-0 draw away to Arsenal, but two defenders ran him close.

The Reds were the better team at the Emirates on Thursday evening, dominating the second half and showing plenty of heart – despite not managing a shot on target.

Here we compare our player ratings with those of the Liverpool Echo, GOAL and the TIA readers.

Alisson (7.60) didn’t put a foot wrong between the sticks for Liverpool, on a wet night in north London, making four saves in testing conditions.

The Reds’ No. 1 got the highest average rating, with GOAL’s Richie Mills pointing out that it was partly down to a “solid defensive performance” overall from the Reds.

For that reason, Virgil van Dijk (7.58) and Ibrahima Konate (7.58) were only just behind Alisson.

It was “another strong step in the right direction” for Konate, according to the Echo‘s Ian Doyle, as his improved form continues.

Writing for This Is Anfield, Danny Gallagher felt Van Dijk used his “competitive nature to good measure,” having got “fire in his belly” after a dust-up with Declan Rice.

Cody Gakpo (5.53) was disappointing on the night, though, not offering enough and getting the lowest rating among the media and supporters.

What the stats say

FotMob also picked out Alisson as Liverpool’s best player, with his world-class handling shining through.

He made a total of four saves and played his part in a stubborn Reds rearguard.

Milos Kerkez was tasked with dealing with the dangerous Bukayo Saka, but he was excellent, having the joint-highest duel win percentage (66.6%) of any player on the pitch, winning six of nine.

Meanwhile, Konate made the most defensive contributions for the Reds (10), while midfield stalwarts Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister had nine apiece.
