Arsenal legend Ian Wright has admitted he is worried about the performances of striker Viktor Gyokeres. The Englishman believes the new signing is not making the right moves in the box when balls are put into the six-yard box.
Speaking on Premier League productions, Wright said that Gyokeres needs to be doing a lot more than he has done for Arsenal this season. He wants the striker to be the difference-maker for Mikel Arteta's side, as title-winning sides need a forward who gets into the right place at the right time to score a goal out of nothing. He was talking about the goalless draw against Liverpool when he said (via Metro):
"What I would say though Mike, with those teams you mentioned, they had a striker that can… In those moments when the game's tight, you're not going to get many chances, that's what we thought we bought and that's what you need. Look at the balls that went across goal. When you're paying that kind of money, they have to be there."
"That's what makes the difference in games like this because we created enough in the first half to get something but we didn't have someone to take the chance. Then in the second half you get more and more nervous because of everything Arsenal are trying to do. You could feel them getting more nervous and deeper and you can't do that. We need to finish games off a bit more comfortably than we are at the minute."
Wright's comments come just days after JamieCarragher claimed that Gabriel Jesus was a better forward for Arteta's side than Gyokeres. He claimed that the Brazilian would score more goals for the Gunners and be key to their winning games.
Ian Wright set a low target for Viktor Gyokeres at Arsenal this season
Ian Wright was on the Stick to Football podcast in August when he surprised Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville by claiming that Viktor Gyokeres' target for the Premier League season should be 10 to 15 goals. He said that the Gunners needed others to score as well and said:
"I think if he scores 10 to 15 goals in the Premier League with another five or six pitching in obviously."
Gyokeres has scored five goals in the Premier League this season, but has managed just one in his last 10 games for the Gunners in all competitions.
