British broadcaster Piers Morgan has raised concerns about striker Viktor Gyokeres following Arsenal's draw with Liverpool. The Gunners failed to extend their lead at the top of the table as they were held to a 0-0 draw by the reigning league champions on Thursday, January 8.
After the game, Morgan, an avid Arsenal supporter, took to X to share his thoughts. He described this side's performance as 'poor and oddly listless', but took solace in the point gained and their lead atop the standings.
However, he also highlighted Gyokeres' lack of proficiency in the final third as worrisome and expressed his displeasure at the ugly incident involving Gabriel Martinelli and Conor Bradley. In the closing stages of the game, the Brazilian threw the ball at the injured Reds defender and shoved him as he lay on the turf, in a bid to restart play quickly.
Morgan posted on X:
"Poor, oddly listless performance by Arsenal. Worried about Gyokeres, who doesn’t even look like scoring, and didn’t like what Martinelli did to Bradley at the end. But I’ll take the point, and happy to be 6pts clear at the top."
Arsenal were dominated in possession by Arne Slot's side (48% -52%) and could only muster four shots on target, while creating just one big chance. Gyokeres, meanwhile, started the match but was taken off in the 64th minute after failing to impress.
The 27-year-old has failed to live up to expectations since his £64 million move to the Emirates from Sporting CP in the summer, recording seven goals in 27 outings so far. Gyokeres has managed only two goals in his last 10 matches across competitions, fueling concerns about his adaptation and the club's attacking output.
Roy Keane calls out Arsenal star after draw with Liverpool
Manchester United legend, Roy Keane, was unimpressed with Declan Rice's performance during Arsenal's goalless draw with Liverpool on Thursday. He described the Englishman's display as 'sloppy' and claimed that Arne Slot's side would have taken the game had they shown more intent.
"Rice was a bit sloppy. Lewis-Skelly didn't even look ready to come onto the pitch. If Liverpool had a bit more about them, it would have been worse for Arsenal," Keane told Sky Sports (via Football London).
Heading into the clash with Liverpool, Rice was tipped to dominate the midfield amid his form and the Reds' struggles. However, the 26-year-old had a quiet game, recording one shot on target, two tackles, four recoveries and one interception. He recorded no touches in the opposition's box and was dribbled past twice (via FotMob).
The Gunners will next be in action in the FA Cup on Sunday, January 11, when they play Championship side Portsmouth away.
