It is unclear whether Arsenal would move now or wait until the end of the season, when Guehi would be available on a free transfer. The club explored a move last summer but went in a different direction, signing Spain prospect Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia and bringing in Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen.
If Guehi stays at Palace for the final six months of his deal, there is expected to be heavy competition from Europe’s top clubs.
Crystal Palace are under no pressure to sell cheaply, even with his contract running down. Liverpool had a £35m bid plus £5m in add-ons accepted last summer but failed to complete the deal before deadline day. Palace believe they could still command a similar fee in January, particularly with Man City keen after injuries to Josko Gvardiol, Ruben Dias and John Stones.
Palace are still involved in the Europa League, have an FA Cup campaign ahead and have ambitions of pushing for a European place. That could lead them to demand around £40m, a figure that would test Man City’s resolve.
Liverpool remain interested, while Bayern Munich’s pursuit is also strong. Manager Vincent Kompany is a long-time admirer, and Harry Kane is understood to be keen on seeing his England team-mate join him in Germany.
Arsenal’s ambition in the market has been clear, with sporting director Andrea Berta pushing for greater competition across the squad. Signing one of England’s leading defenders on a free transfer would represent a major opportunity.
Palace manager Oliver Glasner admitted this week that the situation is far from straightforward.
“Honestly, I don’t know what will happen,” he said. “From a sporting point of view, everyone wants Marc to stay. The chairman will tell you the same.
“But life isn’t one-dimensional. The contract ends in summer and if a massive offer comes, there may be a moment when the financial side becomes more important. I’m not naive. If Man City come with a huge offer and Marc wants it, it will happen.”
