Marc Guehi asking price ‘drops below £35m’ as Crystal Palace anticipate Liverpool offer

Liverpool centre-back Marc Guehi is expected to not only be available this month but for a fee lower than the £35 million agreed with Crystal Palace in September.

The price drop:Crystal Palace are reportedly willing to accept less than £35 million for Marc Guehi this month to avoid losing him for free this summer.

Injury necessity: **Conor Bradley**‘s serious injury against Arsenal could force Liverpool’s hand, with Joe Gomez now required to cover right-back.

Transfer competition: Despite interest from Man City and Bayern Munich, Liverpool remain in the running for the 25-year-old.

The need for defensive reinforcements at Anfield was magnified on Thursday night as Conor Bradley suffered what looks to be a serious injury in the 0-0 draw with Arsenal.

If sidelined with knee or ankle damage as suspected, the right-back would join Giovanni Leoni on the long-term absentee list and increase the reliance on Joe Gomez.

And with Gomez likely to be needed more regularly at right-back, Liverpool will almost certainly need another centre-back – which is where Guehi comes in.

Sky Sports report on Friday morning that Palace are anticipating an offer from the champions this month and would sell for less than £35 million.

That comes after Liverpool’s £35 million deal to sign Guehi – which would also have included a 10 percent sell-on clause – fell through on deadline day in the summer as Palace pulled out in the final hour.

Liverpool had been expected to move again for the 25-year-old but only at the end of the season when he would be available on a free transfer.

But a number of factors, including Bradley’s new layoff and interest from Man City along with the likes of Arsenal and Bayern Munich, could force their hand.

The exact fee Palace would be seeking this month remains to be seen but the London club would still push for the best deal possible.

It is maintained that no decision has been made on Guehi’s future at this stage and Palace are yet to receive any formal offers.

But it will be interesting to see if Liverpool’s interest develops in the coming weeks, with the England international an ideal addition for the short and long-term.

Guehi is a natural centre-back but can also fill in at right-back or even as a defensive midfielder, while his age and experience make him an obvious candidate to eventually take over from Virgil van Dijk as the leader in defence.

If he were to move clubs in January he would need assurances of a regular starting role with the World Cup coming up this summer.

Arne Slot could clearly offer him that as Liverpool continue to face issues at the back and doubts remain over Ibrahima Konate‘s future beyond the current campaign.
