Arsenal and Manchester City have both entered the race for Liverpool’s long-term target Marc Guehi, with the Crystal Palace captain now one of the most sought-after defenders in Europe.
The England international, who came agonizingly close to joining Liverpool in a £35 million deal last summer—even completing a medical before Palace dramatically pulled the plug at the eleventh hour—is now at the center of an intense three-way Premier League battle.
City have emerged as frontrunners in the January race, with reports suggesting Pep Guardiola’s side are increasingly confident of securing Guehi for around £30 million in the coming days. The urgency stems from City’s defensive crisis, with Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, and John Stones all sidelined through injury.
Reliable reports on Wednesday then confirmed that Arsenal had now thrown their hat into the ring, with the Gunners prepared to join the January transfer race despite already strengthening their defense with Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquera last summer. However, it remains unclear whether Mikel Arteta’s side will bid this month or wait until summer when Guehi becomes a free agent.
Liverpool, meanwhile, appear content to hold their position and wait for a summer move rather than engage in a January bidding war.
Now Sky Sports have come out with a fresh update, claiming that Guehi himself “remains committed” to Palace this winter:
“Sky Sports News understands that Marc Guehi remains committed to Crystal Palace, and nothing has yet been decided about whether he will leave this month, with the Eagles yet to receive any formal approaches from any club.
“Man City are discussing whether to move for Guehi. Palace believe Liverpool could try to sign him this month too. Palace are expected to consider offers this month that are below last summer’s asking price.”
