Federico Chiesa’s Liverpool stint could be about to end this month, with his former club Juventus making a dramatic U-turn to bring the Italian winger back to Turin this January – barely a year and a half after forcing him out the door.

Widespread reports from Italy have asserted that the Serie A giants have formally opened talks with Liverpool over a potential winter reunion with Chiesa, who has endured a tough spell at Anfield since his bargain £12 million move in August 2024. The 28-year-old has started just two Premier League matches across his entire Liverpool tenure, managing only 227 minutes of action this season despite the club’s current lack of depth upfront.

Juventus unceremoniously pushed Chiesa out in summer 2024 when then-manager Thiago Motta expelled him from the squad and sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli failed to agree a contract extension. Fast forward 18 months, and with both Motta and Giuntoli now gone from the club, the Bianconeri are rolling out the red carpet for his return.

A major sticking point in negotiations centers on the structure of any deal. Juventus are pushing hard for a six-month loan with an option to buy, while Liverpool insists on a permanent transfer that guarantees they recoup the €12 million invested just 18 months ago.

Reports from Gazzetta dello Sport indicate the Reds are seeking between €12-15 million for the struggling winger, who earns approximately £120,000-140,000 per week at Anfield on a contract running until 2028. Juventus haven’t yet submitted a formal offer, with journalist Gianluca Di Marzio revealing the club may be willing to structure a loan with an obligation to buy under certain conditions—likely tied to playing time and Champions League qualification.

But it seems Chiesa is open to the transfer, and has been doing his own homework according to the printed edition of Tuttosport. It’s claimed that he has made phone calls to some of his ex-teammates.

The Italian winger has specifically reached out to strike partner Dusan Vlahovic, midfielder Manuel Locatelli, and defender Federico Gatti to get the inside track on what’s changed at the Allianz Stadium.

It remains to be seen if the club decides to let Chiesa go with Alexander Isak out for most of the season and Mohamed Salah’s situation still to be ironed out.
