Chelsea are being linked with a move for a defender, but they may have to wait until the summer.

Chelsea are being linked with a move for an experienced defender as they look to bolster Liam Rosenior’s new back line. The Blues are now entering another new era, with Rosenior now in charge after being appointed as Enzo Maresca’s replacement.

Rosenior has his work cut out, four points off the top four and with this side having struggled for consistency for much of the season. On top of that, Chelsea are likely to continue their current transfer strategy of signing young, albeit Rosenior may have negotiated the right to sign a polished player or two when he took the job.

One area where Chelsea could certainly do with more experience is at centre-back. Maresca asked for a centre-back signing when Levi Colwill was ruled out for much of the season in the summer, but he was denied by the Chelsea board, leading to the rift that ended the relationship.

The question now is whether Chelsea are willing to admit they were wrong and sign a defender, or whether they are still wholly committed to backing the young defenders at the club, even in the wake of poor results.

Chelsea linked with seasoned centre-back

Chelsea are now being linked with a new centre-back in Bayern Munich star Kim min-Jae. According to Fichajes, Min-Jae could be available for around £26million this month, with Bayern Munich hoping to sign Marc Guehi, although that deal would be for the summer.

Min-Jae is still in his prime years, at 29 years of age, but he has been in and out this season, making nine Bundesliga appearances so far, while he has made five Champions League appearances. Min-Jae joined Bayern for around £44.3million from Napoli in 2023 and was coveted by a number of Premier League clubs at the time.

He has since won a Bundesliga title to go with his Serie A title with Napoli.

Transfer may have to wait until the summer

Despite the reports, Min-jae says he is not considering a transfer currently. He said: “I have never seriously considered a transfer.”

Meanwhile, German journalist Florian Plettenberg has said on Sky Sports Germany: “Kim Min-jae attracted interest from several clubs, including Fenerbahçe, ahead of the winter transfer window. Many Italian clubs are also monitoring his situation.

“But currently, there is no possibility of a transfer. Kim Min-jae is rejecting all offers and has shown his will to stay at Bayern until at least the summer. His contract runs until 2028.”
