“I told the boys” – Liverpool star Mohamed Salah’s rallying cry from AFCON

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has issued a rallying cry from AFCON, as he looks to win the tournament for the first time.

RMC Sport cover comments from the Liverpool and Egypt star today. It seems he’s determined to push Egypt to the title this month.

Egypt take on Ivory Coast in the quarterfinals of the tournament this week. They successfully secured their progress with a win over Benin in the last 16, a game in which Salah was on the scoresheet.

He’s the captain of his country, who have quietly been progressing at AFCON while other teams have taken the headlines in Morocco.

They’re dreaming of adding their name to the trophy for the eighth time in their history. They also keen on erasing the bitter memories of defeats in the finals in 2021 and 2017. If that’s to happen, they need the Liverpool star to be on top form.

He is the undisputed key man for his country and showed that again with an extra time goal in the 3-1 win over Benin.

The Liverpool forward doesn’t believe he and his teammates are favourites. Instead, he issued a rallying call to them to keep focused in every improving AFCON.

“I don’t think we’re favourites,” he said.

“We have a lot of young players, most of whom play in Egypt. We’re simply fighting for our country, and then we’ll see how far it can take us. Here, everyone wants to give their best.

“In Africa, there are no more easy matches. The levels are very close. I told the boys: we don’t see teams losing 4 or 5-0 anymore, and that means a lot.”

Mohamed Salah has been the subject of endless transfer speculation in recent months, with AFCON something of a break for him.
