Manchester City closest to signing Brazilian, despite Tottenham and Newcastle claims

The English press had already reported Manchester City’s interest in Wesley. However, Brazilian outlets have now added important details to the story and clarified where the situation stands.

According to Brazilian outletGlobo Esporte, Manchester City have made direct contact to assess the conditions of a possible deal in this window. That movement places City ahead of Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, who are also credited with interest but have not gone beyond monitoring.

Globo Esporte explain that City have followed Wesley since his time at Flamengo. The club kept himunder observation last summer but chose not to formalise an offer. That decision allowed Roma to complete a €25m transfer, with up to €5m in add-ons linked to collective targets.

Four months later, Manchester City feel their original analysis has been reinforced. Wesley adapted quickly to Serie A and became a regular starter. He has played 21 matches, started 19 of them, and scored three goals.

The reports add that the lack of reliable right-backs on the market has increased Wesley’s appeal. Inside the club, there is a belief that he now represents a lower-risk option for Pep Guardiola and his staff.

Another key factor is international recognition. Wesley has featured in every Brazil squad since Carlo Ancelotti took charge. Manchester City view that continuity as validation, not hype.

Despite the interest, Roma are not keen on selling. The Italian club have not set an asking price and do not plan to negotiate before the World Cup.

As a result, while City are the closest, ahead of Tottenham and Newcastle, but the defender’s next steps remain to be seen as the deadline approaches.
