In terms of who could come in for the Dutchman, Oliver Glasner has been mooted amid his uncertain Crystal Palace contract situation.

Luis Enrique is a long-term option, and the Spaniard is not expected to extend his deal with PSG.

Elsewhere, during Liverpool’s run of nine defeats in 12 at the back end of 2025, a Xabi Alonso return was mooted.

Manchester City eye Xabi Alonso

Alonso’s spell at Real Madrid has been mixed so far, and it’s now been suggested he could be a target for Manchester City.

Duncan Castle revealed the information on The Transfers Podcast and mentioned how Liverpool wanted Alonso before Slot arrived.

He said: “One of the candidates [for City] is Xabi Alonso, who joined Real Madrid in the summer but has struggled to consistently win at the Spanish club to the point where there’s been discussion about whether Madrid might part company with him. A point where Madrid have been defending their summer recruitment process, pointing out that they have one of the youngest and most valuable squads ever at present and briefing that Alonso could have made better use of the resources he has.

“He plays Atlético Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia later on Thursday evening. He’s currently second in La Liga, four points behind Barcelona, seventh in the Champions League, six points off the top, and has suffered a sequence of just two wins in eight matches at one point this season with Madrid. There is clearly the potential there for a parting of ways.

“Alonso had a strong reputation before he went to Germany and then turned himself into probably the most desired manager in European football by taking the Bundesliga title off Bayern Munich with an undefeated domestic season, adding the German Cup to that trophy tally. He was the preferred choice at Liverpool before Arne Slot, but he ultimately elected to join Real Madrid in the summer.”

Why Xabi Alonso rejected Liverpool

The Spaniard was still manager of Bayer Leverkusen when his former side were trying to replace Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool approached Alonso before appointing Slot, but the Spaniard has previously explained why a move did not happen.

Speaking in June 2024, he said: “All these decisions, they need to be thorough. You need to really think about them. And it was more about what I had, not what I’m missing.

“For sure, my bond with Liverpool is there and it’s still there. So there’s no, any kind of issue with that.”
