Arsenal’s Latest Signing: Smilla Holmberg

Arsenal have signed 19-year-old right-back Smilla Holmberg from Hammarby IF. The Swedish defender has been with Hammarby since the age of seven, progressing through the club’s youth system before earning a move to one of England’s biggest clubs.

Holmberg made her senior debut in 2022 and went on to make 96 appearances for Hammarby, scoring 10 goals. During her time with the Stockholm-based club, she won the Swedish League title in 2023 as well as the Swedish Cup in 2023 and 2025.

She also brings international experience to Arsenal, having made her senior Sweden debut against Italy at UEFA Women’s EURO 2025, where she helped her country reach the quarter-finals.

“It’s always been my dream to play for Arsenal. This is a very special moment for me and my family, but it’s also about joining a club with the highest standards and a strong winning culture. I’m excited to start this new chapter, to continue developing my game in a demanding environment and to compete at the highest level. My ambitions align with the club’s and I want to help win silverware here.”

**Words from Head Coach Renée Slegers**: “We’re thrilled to welcome Smilla to the club. She’s a very talented young defender who brings versatility and athleticism, with so much potential for development. I’m looking forward to working with her as we aim for more trophies together.”

Arsenal return to action on 10 January 2026 with a high-stakes Women’s Super League clash against Manchester United, their first match following the winter break.

The Gunners currently sit third in the [WSL](https://womenfootball.blog/womens-super-league-table-standings/) table on 22 points, just one point ahead of Manchester United in fourth. Victory would strengthen Arsenal’s position in the top three and potentially close the gap on second placed Chelsea, while defeat could see Manchester United move into the top three.
