According to league sources, per Kelly Iko of Yahoo, rival executives, agents, and former players, Atlanta is unsure if Okongwu or Mo Gueye can provide the impact needed to make the team a true contender in the Eastern Conference.
The concern comes as the Hawks look to balance a young, athletic roster with veteran leadership. While Okongwu has shown flashes of defensive prowess and rim protection, the front office is reportedly exploring ways to upgrade the center position before the Feb. 5 trade deadline.
The team’s current defensive rating ranks 16th in the league, highlighting the need for a more consistent presence in the paint.

Atlanta recently moved on from Trae Young, shifting the team’s focus to building around breakout star Jalen Johnson and other young talent.
Pairing a high-level center with Johnson could create a versatile, two-way frontcourt capable of reshaping the team’s trajectory. However, uncertainty over Okongwu’s ability to hold down the position long-term has added urgency to the Hawks’ roster planning.
