Why Liverpool fans shouldn't get their hopes up about signing Yan Diomande despite 'dream' admission - opinion

Liverpool have been linked with a potential move for RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande for some time.

Back in mid-December, we saw the Reds’ interest in Diomande, who has a €100m-plus price-tag, mooted.

Those links have now continued into 2026, with a host of clubs thought to be looking at the player.

Liverpool’s interest should be taken ‘very seriously’, one journalist has said, but the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Bayern Munich are also thought to be looking at the player.

Recent comments made by the player may lead some to believe that a move to Anfield is now the most likely course of action for the teenager.

What did Yan Diomande say about Liverpool

In a TikTok live, Diomande praised Liverpool and said it is his father’s dream for him to play for the current Premier League champions.

He said: “I want to play at Anfield, I want to play for Liverpool. I’m a big Liverpool fan.

Good news? Yes, but this isn’t the first time a player from RB Leipzig has spoken about playing for the Reds before moving elsewhere.

Liverpool were Josko Gvardiol’s dream destination

Speaking in 2023, when still on the books of Leipzig, Josko Gvardiol made a very similar admission to the one we have just heard from Diomande.

As quoted by TNT Sports, he said: “My dream club? That would definitely be Liverpool.

“Since I was little, I watched a lot of their matches with my dad.

“We covered every season in detail. It is a club that has remained in my heart”

What happened with Gvardiol? Well, he signed for Manchester City later that year and remains on their books to this day.

It’s not known if Diomande will move in the current transfer window, but it has been shared that Liverpool are expecting a quiet month when it comes to potential incomings.

Couple this with Liverpool’s outlay in the summer and the player’s reported price tag of around £88m, and a move to Anfield may not be as nailed on as some think, despite the recent comments.
