Shrewsbury Town officially sign striker once linked to Liverpool

January is always a crucial month for lower-league clubs. Every game matters. Every point counts. Shrewsbury Town know this all too well.

The League Two side currently sit 22nd in the table, just two points above the relegation zone. The club is fighting for survival, and new signings are expected to make an immediate impact.

This season, Shrewsbury has already acted quickly in the transfer market. The need for goals is urgent, and the club is looking to bring in players who can provide a spark.

For fans watching from afar, it’s always interesting to see the young talents that were once linked to top clubs make their way into League Two.

Some players need the right environment to prove themselves, and January is often when these opportunities arise.

Shrewsbury Town have now confirmed their latest signing: 19-year-old striker Trey Samuel-Ogunsuyi, joining on loan from Sunderland. The Belgium youth international was heavily linked with Liverpool just over a year ago.

Liverpool scouts monitored him closely after impressive performances against the club’s U18 and U21 sides.

Trey arrives at Shrewsbury following a difficult spell in Scotland with Falkirk, where he made nine appearances but struggled for consistent starts. Despite that, his youth record remains impressive. Last season, he scored 15 goals in 20 games across Sunderland’s U18 and U21 teams.

Head coach Michael Appleton is optimistic about Trey’s impact. He said, “Trey has got really good physical attributes, he is a big lad, he’s strong and he’s got good pace.”

Appleton highlighted the striker’s movement, adding, “I like the fact his movement is good. He is comfortable running in behind just as much as he is coming towards the ball. He gives you both options.”

The coach also addressed Trey’s recent struggles, noting, “He didn’t get the minutes he would have wanted at Falkirk, but hopefully we can give him that opportunity and he can score a lot of goals for us.”

Appleton is clear about what is expected: “He has scored goals at youth level. Now he needs to showcase his skills.”

Samuel-Ogunsuyi made his Sunderland first-team debut in January 2025 during an FA Cup tie. He has also represented Belgium at U18 and U19 level. Standing at 1.90m, the striker brings size, pace, and versatility to a Shrewsbury side desperate for goals.

For Liverpool fans, it’s a familiar story: a talented youngster who once caught Anfield’s eye now getting a chance to prove himself elsewhere. If he can find form in Shropshire, it may only be a matter of time before he climbs back up the football ladder.
