FA Cup third-round fixtures are always high stakes, and for lower-league sides, they are a chance to prove themselves against elite opposition. Barnsley know this well.
The League One club is preparing for a tough trip to face Liverpool at Anfield. Every small advantage counts, and strengthening the squad ahead of the game is a clear priority.
Adding experienced players in key positions can make all the difference in a one-off cup tie. Clubs like Barnsley often need leaders at the back who can organize the defense and provide calm under pressure.
For fans and rivals alike, it’s always interesting to see the type of signings that smaller clubs make when facing top-flight opposition.
Barnsley have now officially confirmed the signing of experienced centre-back Eoghan O’Connell on a short-term deal until the end of the season.
The 30-year-old was a free agent after leaving Wrexham, where he played 91 times and helped the club win three promotions, guiding them from the National League back into the Championship.
Head coach Conor Hourihane spoke about the signing, saying, “We’re excited to welcome Eoghan to Oakwell. He brings real leadership, solidity, and football intelligence to our backline.”
“His career speaks volumes, with nearly 300 league appearances and a promotion-winner, he’s exactly the kind of experienced defender we need. Eoghan fits our system and is a fantastic addition on and off the pitch.”
O’Connell began his career at Celtic, where he was named Academy Player of the Year in 2015 and made his senior debut in the Scottish top flight.
He gained further experience during loan spells with Oldham Athletic, Cork City, and Walsall before moving permanently to Bury, then Rochdale, and later Charlton Athletic. Across his career, he has made over 300 league appearances and scored 10 goals.
The defender is now eligible for selection ahead of Barnsley’s FA Cup trip to Liverpool.
For the Reds, it means facing a player with a wealth of experience, leadership, and proven consistency in England’s lower leagues, a challenge that adds an extra layer of intrigue to this traditional cup fixture.
We’re delighted to welcome defender Eoghan O’Connell to Oakwell! 👊
