Newcastle United 3-3 Bournemouth: Eddie Howe’s side have more fitness and injury concerns heading into Manchester City on Tuesday.

The match ended 3-3 after extra time after another frantic game of football at St James’ Park. Harvey Barnes’ second half opener was quickly cancelled out by quickfire goals from Alex Scott and David Brooks to put The Cherries 2-1 ahead.

Substitute Anthony Gordon forced extra time with a 95th-minute penalty before setting up Barnes for his second in the 118th minute as Newcastle looked to have won it.

But there was another late twist in extra time as Marcus Tavernier popped up with a 122nd-minute equaliser to force penalties.

After 18 penalties in the shootout, Newcastle emerged as 7-6 winners with Aaron Ramsdale saving Bafode Diakite's vital spot kick.

Following the match, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe reflected on another eventful match for his side.

Yeah, I think a really great cup tie, I thought. Two teams going for the win. Again, a very open game, similar to Leeds, in the respect that I think we've had a right go today. The players have worked far harder than we wanted them to, with extra time, especially with Tuesday in mind. But the priority was to try and get through and sustain the competition, and we've managed that, so we're very pleased. Now we've got to count the cost of it, really, and try and regroup and try and get the players fresh for Tuesday.”

Howe added: “The one thing we didn't want was extra time. We were well aware of that before the game, but we're 2-1 down with a couple of minutes left. So at that moment, we wanted extra time.

“We wanted to stay in the competition. So we knew as soon as we scored that goal that there was going to be an extra burden on the players.

“Some players, we didn't want them to go through that. Sven Botman would be one. Malick Thiaw, we didn't want them to go through the 30 minutes. Sandro Tonali was having cramp issues.

“So that's why I say there's a cost for us going through today. But at least we did go through. At least there's a positive to come from it. And now I need to think long and hard about the team for Tuesday night.”

In addition to potential fatigue issues, Newcastle were dealt yet another injury blow as Tino Livramento was forced off with a hamstring injury.

Livramento will now miss Tuesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Manchester City as well as the upcoming matches as he faces another spell on the sidelines.

“Yeah, looks like a hamstring problem, which is always a worry when it's a muscular problem,” Howe admitted. “Absolutely devastated for him because he's worked so hard to come back and looked in really good physical shape.

“So I'm not too sure on any other details other than that, but it's going to be a blow. He's obviously going to be out for a period of time.”

Newcastle will also be without Dan Burn, Emil Krafth, William Osula, Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles for the match while Jacob Murphy and Anthony Elanga are doubts.
