Chelsea met Charlton Athletic live on TNT Sports in one of the most anticipated third round ties of the FA Cup but a medical emergency at The Valley led to play being stopped

Charlton Athletic have released a statement

Charlton's FA Cup third tie with Chelsea was delayed due to a medical emergency

The FA Cup third round tie between Charlton Athletic and was halted due to a medical emergency shortly after kick-off.

The Blues were drawn against Championship opposition in last month's draw and the London derby pitting their newly minted head coach, Liam Rosenior, against Nathan Jones' Charlton was subsequently selected for live broadcast by TNT Sports. However, the game was stopped inside the opening quarter of an hour due to a medical emergency.

Charlton's X account confirmed the reason behind the stoppage, posting: "There has been a break in play due to a medical emergency in the crowd."

TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher also confirmed the game had been paused for a medical incident as viewers at home were shown images of the stadium.

Players stayed on the field during the stoppage, which lasted a couple of minutes. Charlton later posted confirming the game was back underway and wished the affected individual well.

"Play has now resumed," they posted. "We wish the supporter affected a speedy recovery."
