January is always tense at the top end of the Premier League. Every dropped point can change the title race, the top-four battle, or European places.
Liverpool and Newcastle United are both right in that mix this season. Liverpool sit fourth. Newcastle are close behind in sixth. Their meeting at Anfield on January 31 is already shaping up to be a key game.
Both sides are fighting for momentum. Liverpool want to protect their home form. Newcastle want to stay in touch with the Champions League places.
In games like this, squad depth matters. So does fitness. One injury can tilt the balance before a ball is even kicked.
From a Liverpool point of view, this is where small details count. You look at how the opposition is shaping up. You check who is fit. You look at who might miss out.
Newcastle have already been stretched at the back this season. They have lost several defenders. That makes their task at Anfield harder.
Something else has now added to their problems. Tino Livramento has picked up another issue in the FA Cup third round tie against Bournemouth. He did not last the full game. He came off before the hour.
Newcastle were forced into a change. With a league trip to Liverpool coming soon, this was not what Eddie Howe needed.
That is when the Newcastle boss spoke. After the game, Howe confirmed the defender had suffered a hamstring injury.
He said, “It looks like a hamstring problem which is always a worry when it is muscular.” He made it clear how serious the setback was. “I am absolutely devastated for him because he has worked so hard to come back in terms of physical shape.”
Howe also admitted the outlook is not positive. “I am not too sure on other details other than that. But he is obviously going to be out for a period of time.” That means Tino Livramento is now a doubt for the Anfield clash.
The Newcastle boss also gave an update on another defender. On Fabian Schar, he said, “There is no change on Fabian, he will see a specialist. But he will be out for a period of time.”
From a Liverpool angle, this matters. Newcastle are already thin at the back. Losing Livramento and Schar weakens them even more. With Anfield waiting, that is an edge Liverpool will look to use.
