Mark Clattenburg identifies key mistake made by referee during Chelsea’s win over Charlton

Chelsea beat Charlton Athletic comfortably in the FA Cup on Saturday, defeating Nathan Jones’ side 5-1.

Jorrel Hato opened the scoring with a fantastic strike before goals from Chelsea teammates Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez.

Miles Leaburn made things interesting when he netted near the hour mark, making the scoreline 2-1 at that stage.

In the end, though, it was an easy win for Liam Rosenior in his first game in charge as Chelsea manager.

Mark Clattenburg explains why Miles Leaburn’s goal shouldn’t have counted

It would have been an even more straightforward win had Leaburn’s goal been disallowed.

According to former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg, Leaburn’s strike should not have counted because teammate Tyreece Campbell was standing in an offside position.

Speaking exclusively to The Chelsea Chronicle, Clattenburg said: “We are now seeing time after time again that players affect the goalkeeper at corners and then stand in an offside position when the second ball comes back towards goal.

“It’s clear that Tyreece Campbell is in an offside position and ducks underneath the ball in front of the Chelsea goalkeeper when Miles Leaburn heads towards goal while Campbell is in line of vision of the goalkeeper. This goal should have been cancelled for offside.”

Leaburn’s goal had The Valley rocking and halved Chelsea’s lead, so it really could have been an uncomfortable 30 minutes for the visitors.

Thankfully for Rosenior, Guiu managed to score a few minutes later and kill off the game. Pat Nevin was impressed with Guiu’s contribution, with the young striker working his socks off on the night.

Liam Rosenior will be satisfied with how Chelsea defended against Charlton

With VAR, then, Chelsea would probably have kept a clean sheet. Considering that, Rosenior can be satisfied with his team’s defensive performance at The Valley.

At times, Tosin Adarabioyo and Benoit Badiashile did struggle when they allowed the ball to bounce after a direct kick. But bar those moments, Chelsea defended pretty well.

Of course, with Charlton being Championship opposition, that is to be expected, but cup ties can be unpredictable. Fortunately for Rosenior, his side made sure there was no upset in south London.

Chelsea will have to defend well again next Wednesday. They face Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-finals, a fixture where the Blues will obviously be tested more.

That is the kind of game where Rosenior will be judged, not a third round FA Cup tie against a Championship team.
