Powys county farmer to judge National Commercial Cattle Show

Tracey Jones, a beef and sheep farmer from Erwood, near Builth Wells, has been appointed as one of the judges for the 2026 National Commercial Cattle Show, part of the National Beef Association (NBA) Beef Expo.

The event will take place at Melton Mowbray on May 30.

Ms Jones said: "I’m very pleased and honoured to be asked to judge at Beef Expo.

"I’m really looking forward to seeing the Baby Beef cattle and assessing their potential.

"I’ll be looking for animals that are smart, eye-catching and correct on their legs.

"In the show ring, I see standards continuing to rise year on year, so I know that judging will be a challenging task."

Ms Jones will judge the Baby Beef classes, Baby Beef Championship, and Young Handlers classes.

Ms Jones will be joined by co-judge Glyn Howatson, who will judge the Native and Continental classes and the Supreme Championship.

She and her husband Phil run a mixed beef and sheep farm with a 50-cow suckler herd of Limousin-cross and British Blue-cross cattle, alongside a flock of 450 ewes.

Livestock has long been a central part of her life.

She previously kept a pedigree Hereford herd and competed successfully in young handler classes at both the Royal Welsh and Three Counties Show.

Together with her husband, she has produced show calves for more than 25 years, including winners at the Brecon Show Potential Sale and the Baby Beef Heifer Champion at the Welsh Winter Fair.

Ms Jones is no stranger to the judging ring, having previously officiated in the commercial cattle section at the Balmoral Show in Northern Ireland.

Neil Shand, chief executive of the National Beef Association, said: "The National Commercial Cattle Show is recognised nationally for the quality of livestock it attracts and therefore demands judges of the highest calibre.

"Glyn and Tracey bring exceptional experience, knowledge and credibility to the role, and we are delighted to have them judging at NBA Beef Expo 2026."

The National Commercial Cattle Show is a highlight of the Beef Expo, drawing around 120 head of top-quality cattle from across the UK.
