Cristian Romero was recently suspended by the FA.
Cristian Romero has been making the headlines for various reasons. There have been reports that he has been planning to leave the club in the summer if Thomas Frank is not backed by the club’s hierarchy. And now, as per Teamtalk, Real Madrid have shown interest in signing the center-back. The Los Blancos are in search of a new center-back, preferably in the January transfer window.
As David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger are out of contract at Real Madrid next summer, with Dean Huijsen and Raul Ascencio being young and with Eder Militao being prone to injuries, the 15-time Champions League winners are targeting Romero to solve their defensive problems, as per Fichajes.

Romero still has a contract till 2029 with the Spurs and is currently Tottenham’s highest-paid player, earning around £150,000-a-week basic but closer to £200,000-a-week when one factors in bonuses. However, as Fichajes reports, Madrid are planning for an astronomical offer of €80million (£69.4m, $93.1m) to convince the North London club to sell their highest-paid player, with Xabi Alonso giving the ‘final approval’ for the potential massive offer. It is also worth noting that Romero had once welcomed a move to Barcelona.
It will be very unlikely for Madrid to sign someone in the middle of the season. Earlier in the summer, the Sun reported on May 12, 2025, that Real Madrid were targeting Romero. However, the World Cup winner then signed a new deal with Tottenham. Madrid is also interested in the second center-back of the Lilywhites, who is Micky van de Ven. As per reports from Teamtalk correspondent Dean Jones, Real Madrid have Van de Ven on their radar for a potential 2026 deal.
Spurs will think of letting go of their best defender, as he was their best man in the 3-2 loss against Bournemouth. As stats from Squawka (via X) he won 21 duels against Bournemouth in GW21, the most by a player in a Premier League game this season. It’s the most duels won in a PL game for Tottenham across the last 10 seasons.
However, on Friday, he was banned for one match by the FA due to a breach committed during last month’s 2-1 loss against Liverpool, as he was adjudged to have ‘acted improperly’ towards referee John Brooks after receiving the second yellow card. Thus, the Argentine center-back will be missing out on Saturday’s FA Cup third-round game against Aston Villa.
