Speculations suggest that Young and the Wizards will ultimately sign a two-year extension soon.
Regardless of how this season plays out for both sides, it has been speculated that the Washington Wizards will commit to Trae Young via a new contract.

"Yet there are already rumbles about Young ultimately securing a two-year extension from the Wizards ... no matter how much or how little he plays for the rest of the season with Washington desperate to hold onto a first-round pick that is only top-eight protected," NBA insider Marc Stein wrote in his latest report.
"Atlanta's well-known reluctance to extend Young's contract in the summer was the first domino that led to this week's Trae-to-DC trade materializing before his eighth season as a Hawk had even reached the halfway point."
Young is currently on a five-year, $215 million max contract. He holds a player option of $49 million for next season.
The Wizards have identified Young as an instrumental piece who can help them take the next step. The rebuilding franchise remains invested in its young core, headlined by rising star Alex Sarr.
It remains to be seen when the star guard will make his Wizards debut. Young remains recovering from a sprained MCL in his right knee and a right quadriceps contusion, limiting his appearances to just 10 games this season.
His offensive numbers have declined, averaging just 19.3 points while shooting a career-worst 30.5 percent from beyond the arc.
Should an extension materialize, it will finally signal Washington's intent to pursue a potential contention with Young leading the way.
