On This Day in Football: 12th January

On this day, a future legend of English football, Dixie Dean, made his Football League debut. Just shy of his 17th birthday, Dean played for Tranmere Rovers in a Division 3 (North) match against Rotherham County, now known as Rotherham United. Despite Tranmere’s 5-1 defeat, Dean’s performance in subsequent matches was remarkable. He scored 27 goals in 30 League appearances for Tranmere, catching the eye of Everton, who signed him in March 1925. Dean’s prolific scoring continued at Everton, where he netted 349 goals in 399 League appearances, setting a club record. His 60 League goals in the 1927/28 season remain an English record. A statue commemorating Dean was unveiled at Goodison Park in May 2001, and he passed away on 1st March 1980 at Goodison Park during an Everton-Liverpool derby.
