One of the best young CBs in Europe has become a target for Chelsea, he's Colwill 2.0 - opinion

Liam Rosenior kicked off his Chelsea tenure in the best way possible on Saturday night.

The young manager saw his side demolish Charlton Athletic 5-1 in the FA Cup, and while it wasn't the perfect performance, it was certainly encouraging.

However, there is still just under half the season to go, and fans will expect the club to end their Premier League campaign with Champions League qualification.

To give the new boss the best chance of doing just that, Chelsea need to back him in the transfer market, which, based on reports, seems to be their plan, as they're being linked with someone who could be another Levi Colwill.

Chelsea target their next Colwill

Chelsea have built themselves a very talented squad over the last few years, with superstar players like Moises Caicedo, Cole Palmer and Marc Cucurella who rank among the best in the Premier League.

However, there are also, unfortunately, a few areas of the squad that still need work, with the centre of defence being one of them.

Sure, Colwill and Wesley Fofana are excellent, and Trevoh Chalobah can do a job, but after that, there aren't many options good enough for a top side.

Fortunately, the club appear to have identified someone who could help them with this problem, someone who could be their next Colwill.

At least that is according to a recent report from Spain, which claims Chelsea are very interested in Jacobo Ramón.

The report has revealed that, alongside Liverpool, Chelsea have 'intensified their monitoring' of the Spaniard in recent months.

However, a bigger problem than the Reds' interest in the Como ace is Real Madrid's, who, according to other reports cited in the story, have a buy-back option for the youngster worth up to €10m, which is about £9m.

Ramon

It could therefore be a complicated transfer to get over the line for Chelsea, but given Ramón's immense ability and sky-high potential, one they should be working hard on, especially as he could be their next Colwill.

Why Ramon would be Chelsea's new Colwill

So, the first reason why Ramon could be Chelsea's next Colwill is that, like the Englishman was and still is, the Spaniard is very highly rated by those in the know and seen as someone who could go right to the very top.

Jacobo Ramón

For example, analyst Spencer Mossman has described the youngster as "an absolute gem" and a "massive presence in the back line."

More than that, though, he also praises the 20-year-old for how often he "wins in the air" and his "good sense of when to engage and when to back off."

Finally, Mossman also highlights that, in addition to his old-school abilities, the highly exciting prospect has a "great passing range and is already trusted with a high volume of first and second phase of build-up passes."

It's hard not to hear all of this and not think of the injured Blues star who, at his very best, is someone who is excellent with and without the ball.

The next reason the Como star could be the West Londoners' next Colwill is the fact that he's already been compared to him.

Yes, according to FBref, the Englishman has been the seventh-most similar centre-back to him in Europe's top five leagues over the last 365 days.

The best way to understand how this conclusion has been reached is to look at some of the metrics in which the pair rank so closely, with the Chelsea star's numbers from last year and the Spaniard's from this season.

These metrics include things like non-penalty expected goals plus assists, progressive carries, passing accuracy, passes into the final third and penalty area, blocks and more, all per 90.

Jacobo Ramón

Ultimately, while it's still early in his career, Ramon looks like a superstar in the making and could develop into even more like the incredible Colwill.

Therefore, even if it's a challenge, Chelsea should do what they can to sign him as soon as possible.
