Hawks could make another trade: Dallas big man linked to Atlanta

The Atlanta Hawks are exploring a potential trade for Mavericks center Daniel Gafford ahead of the February 5 deadline as they look to bolster their frontcourt following the Trae Young trade.

The Atlanta Hawks remain active on the trade market ahead of the February 5 deadline and are continuing to explore frontcourt upgrades.

Dallas Mavericks / Schedule

Atlanta was previously linked to a blockbuster move for 10-time All-Star Anthony Davis, but his recent hand injury may force the team to reconsider its approach.

Instead, the Hawks appear to be turning their attention to another big man – Dallas Mavericks center Daniel Gafford, who has been involved in multiple trade rumors around the league.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Atlanta was never willing to include former No. 1 overall pick Zaccharie Risacher in a potential package built around the expiring contracts of Kristaps Porzingis and Luke Kennard for Davis.

However, Stein notes that rival executives believe the Hawks could pivot toward a deal for Gafford, one that would remove Risacher from negotiations entirely if they choose.

Stein added that Atlanta has shown interest in Gafford alongside Indiana and Boston, the latter of which had previously explored the trade market for Anfernee Simons.

The Mavs are said to be open to trading Gafford and are looking for a return centered on young prospects and expiring contracts.

To this day, Gafford has also been linked to Toronto and several other teams.

The 27-year-old center signed a three-year, $54 million extension last summer. This season, he is averaging 7.9 points and 6.4 rebounds in 28 games, including 19 starts, for Dallas.

The Hawks have already made a franchise-altering move this trade season, moving Trae Young to the Washington Wizards in exchange for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert.
