Michael Carrick could take charge of Man Utd when they face Manchester City in the Premier League this weekend.
Manchester United expect to have their new caretaker head coach in charge in time to face Man City in the Premier League this weekend.
Darren Fletcher took charge of his final match as interim head coach when United were dumped out of the FA Cup by Brighton on Sunday afternoon. It means their sole focus is on success in the league as they search for Champions League qualification, with the caretaker boss set to be in charge for 17 league matches before a permanent successor to Ruben Amorim is appointed in the summer.
Michael Carrick has emerged as the favourite for the caretaker position after he held positive talks with the club hierarchy last week. United also spoke to former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over the weekend, though it is understood Carrick is the new front-runner for the role. United aim to have a caretaker appointed in time for their return to full training on Wednesday morning.

Manchester United early team news vs Man City
Manchester United are back in action when they host Man City in the Premier League on Saturday lunchtime, and whoever takes charge of the match will already have an idea of their squad at their disposal.
United are currently without just one player due to injury, while Noussair Mazraoui is the only player still involved in the Africa Cup of Nations. The new caretaker head coach will be boosted by the return of attacking duo Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo after they both exited the international competition at the quarter-final stage.
Matthijs De Ligt is still sidelined after he picked up an injury following United's 2-1 away win at Crystal Palace back in November. The Dutch defender has missed nine matches across all competitions, and there is no expectation he will be available for selection by the weekend.
The other piece of early team news is that Shea Lacey will be suspended for the derby clash after he was sent off in the final minutes of United's defeat to Brighton at the weekend. The 18-year-old impressed during his latest substitute appearance but was given his marching orders when he was shown a yellow card in the 87th minute for a foul and picked up another yellow card two minutes later for throwing the ball to the ground.
