Stephen Curry #30 of the Golden State Warriors goes to the basket against Vit Krejci #27 and Jalen Johnson #1 of the Atlanta Hawks in the second half at Chase Center on January 11, 2026 in San Francisco, California.

Iconic sharpshooter Stephen Curry delivered some electric moments Sunday, including a majestic up-and-under layup through three Atlanta Hawks defenders and a lookawy three in front of his own bench. The 37-year-old also made history on two counts en route to 31 points and five assists. Yet, the Golden State Warriors suffered a blowout loss, 124-111, at home, ruining another Curry masterclass.

Stephen Curry Makes History

Curry passed the G.O.A.T. Michael Jordan’s record for most 30-point games by a guard after turning 30 with his 176th 30-point effort since his 30th birthday. He is now just 14 30-point games away from surpassing Denver Nuggets legend Alex English (190) and 25 more such explosions from eclipsing Karl Malone (201). Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James (227) sits atop the leaderboard for most 30-point games after 30.

The incredible lookaway three also meant Curry (26,250) and his father, Dell Curry (12,670), eclipsed Joe (5,252) and Kobe Bryant (33,643) for second place in the most combined points by a father-son duo in NBA history.

LeBron James (42,601) and Bronny James (91) sit at first place.

The Currys passed the Bryants tonight.

The loss snapped Golden State’s two-game winning streak and added another roadblock to their path of securing a top-six seed. Steve Kerr’s men are 3.5 games behind the sixth-seeded Phoenix Suns (24-15) for the sixth and final guaranteed playoff berth and 3.0 games behind the seventh-seeded Houston Rockets (22-14).

Warriors Lose to Hawks

Unless the Warriors make significant roster upgrades by the NBA trade deadline, it seems unlikely that they will secure a guaranteed playoff berth. Unfortunately, even Curry knows as much, as evidenced by his postgame comments on Sunday.

Curry admitted that the Warriors offense struggled to penetrate a Hawks defense with lanky wing defenders such as Jalen Johnson and Dyson Daniels, not to mention a towering frontcourt of Mouhammed Gueye and Onyeka Okongwu.

“Usually, there’s going to be one or two guys that you can kind of go at to create an advantage,” Curry said of trying to get to the paint, via NBC Sports Bay Area.

“Doesn’t mean they’re just going to do that olé defense and just let you get to the paint. But you can create an advantage and then make them react, get the ball moving side to side. We did that well for short spurts out of the game. You just got to be able to have composure and attack if you have a little bit of an angle just to get downhill.”

Although the Warriors scored 54 paint points, they could not break down the Hawks defense to create open looks for threes. That would explain why Kerr’s team shot a deplorable 10-of-42 from three in Sunday’s loss.

“We struggled to get paint touches tonight,” Curry said. “The ball was kind of just swinging around the perimeter, and they were able to keep five bodies on bodies. That’s usually what good defenses do. Tonight, we didn’t have that answer.”

The Warriors could desperately add some shooting reinforcements at the trade deadline. One name who has been strongly linked to them, Michael Porter Jr., would solve many of their issues, even though he’s expected to command a steep asking price.
