Referee stops WSL player making her debut after 'schoolgirl error' rule breach

West Ham defender Estelle Cascarino has been accused of making a "schoolgirl error" after she was stopped from making her debut for the Women's Super League side.

The 28-year-old France international, who recently joined the Hammers on a six-month loan from Juventus, was set to make her much-anticipated bow in Sunday's WSL clash against Chelsea.

With her side trailing 4-0, new West Ham manager Rita Guarino attempted to introduce Cascarino at the start of the second half.

But as she stood waiting on the Kingsmeadow touchline, the defender was denied permission to enter the field by referee Stacey Pearson, who pointed out that Cascarino was wearing an earring.

As seen in the footage below, Cascarino looked perplexed as she spoke to Pearson.

The inner-ear piercing had been covered in tape but Football Association rules state that "all items of jewellery are forbidden and must be removed", meaning Cascarino was denied the chance to make her debut.

She was allowed to wear the piercing when playing for Juventus.

The incident has become a big talking point, with former England international Fara Williams criticising Cascarino's "schoolgirl error".

"I know you used to be able to have earrings taped. But the modern game doesn't allow for it," Williams told The Women's Football Show.

"It's a schoolgirl error for me, a new signing wanting to make an impression, and that's not the impression you'd want."

Nia Jones, who has represented Wales on the international stage, described the situation as an "absolute circus", adding: "She's an experienced player, a French international formerly of Juventus and PSG."

Jones added: "I was glad to see she didn't get to come on at all because I thought that was a bit embarrassing."

Rita Guarino, who was taking charge of her first West Ham game on Sunday, was just as puzzled as Cascarino as she spoke about the incident after their 5-0 defeat to Chelsea.

"She [Cascarino] can't take off this earring; it's like a tattoo. She needs a doctor to take it off and she had tape," explained Guarino.

"She played in the Champions League with tape, so I can't understand how we missed using a player in a game for this."
