Carlos Alcaraz sends tribute to NBA legend during first Australian Open practice

Carlos Alcaraz has arrived at the Australian Open, where he could be set to make tennis history.

Alcaraz could become the youngest player in tennis history to achieve the ‘Career Grand Slam’ at the Australian Open.

The world number one has already won Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open, and the Melbourne Grand Slam is the only major the star is missing.

Alcaraz began his preparations on 11 January after travelling from his South Korea exhibition with Jannik Sinner.

Alcaraz might have at least a week until he plays competitively, but the star has a hectic schedule up until the Australian Open opening day.

The star is set to play Alex de Minaur in an exhibition match in the Australian Open’s ‘Opening Week’, which also includes the very first 1 Point Slam.

Alcaraz will star in the tournament which pits professionals and amateurs against each other in a one point shootout, with the overall winner collecting $1 million.

The world number one arrived for his first practice session on 11 January, and he was seen wearing an LA Lakers jersey.

Alcaraz sent a touching tribute to basketball legend LeBron James, by wearing the jersey with his name printed on the back.

All of the male top players have arrived at the Australian Open already, following the culmination of the Brisbane International and the United Cup.

While Alcaraz did not play either of those tournaments, the world number one has started his preparations early for the Melbourne event.

The star will return to the Rod Laver Arena on 12 January to practice alongside world number nine Taylor Fritz.

Fritz and Alcaraz have met plenty of times on the ATP Tour, with the American yet to beat Alcaraz in a competitive match.

The star did, however, beat Alcaraz in straight sets during the Laver Cup as Team World defeated Team Europe in San Francisco.
