Man City Could Make“Serious Approach”For Chelsea Star They Missed Out On Signing Over 3 Years Ago

Man City have been making enquiries about Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella, according to reports.

Writing on his Substack, journalist Simon Phillips says that while a bid is not expected during the January transfer window, a “serious approach” could be made at the end of the season.

Cucurella still has two and a half years left on his contract at Stamford Bridge, and while the Blues are under no pressure to sell, a decision will have to be made on his future soon.

Since taking over the London club, Blueco have generally looked to sell players, rather than allowing them to leave on a free. Both Mason Mount and Conor Gallagher were victims of that policy.

If they don’t offer a new deal to Cucurella, the Spaniard could soon be on the market, and it appears City may be interested in securing his services.

Cucurella could have moved to the Etihad in 2022

The defender was a top target for Pep Guardiola‘s side before the start of the 2022/23 season, but they refused to meet Brighton’s asking price at the time.

Chelsea ultimately paid £62m for Cucurella. Initially, the fullback struggled at his new club, but over the last two years, he has become one of the Blues’ most consistent players.

Do Man City need another left-back?

It should be pointed out that the Cityzens paid Wolves an initial £31m for Rayan Ait-Nouri last year, but the Algerian international has not been available as much as hoped.

An ankle injury and his participation in the African Cup of Nations have limited his game time, while Guardiola has also favoured Nico O’Reilly ahead of him.

If City are not happy with Ait-Nouri, that would add more credence to the rumour that they have reignited their interest in Cucurella.
