Michael Owen thinks two former Liverpool teammates were better centre-backs than Nemaja Vidic

Michael Owen snubbed Nemanja Vidic in favour of two former Liverpool teammates when making his best XI.

Owen played for some of the biggest clubs both in England and further afield.

Stints at Liverpool, Man United and Real Madrid saw him play alongside some legends of the game.

One such legend is Vidic who, alongside Rio Ferdinand, formed one of the best defensive pairings we have seen in the Premier League, winning five titles and a historic two Player of the Season awards as a centre-back.

Despite that, Owen rates two former Reds above him.

Michael Owen picks Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia over Nemanja Vidic

Even the stoutest Liverpool fan might struggle to agree wholeheartedly with the 46-year-old on this one.

Owen’s best teammates XI — as seen in Telegrafi — sets up as a five-back formation with three centre-halves.

He does give some favour to Man United in picking Ferdinand, but Vidic is left on the bench with Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia getting the nod.

The two are Liverpool greats, who were part of that famous Champions League-winning side in 2005, but their resumes do pale in comparison to that of the Serbian.

Perhaps it’s the fact that he was a fringe player at Old Trafford and has better memories with the Liverpool pair. Owen was a special young talent at Liverpool, but made just 31 appearances in three years for the Red Devils.

Vidic is up there with the best defenders to grace English football. That’s coming from a Liverpool fan who rates both Carragher and Hyypia, but having them both ahead of an all-timer like him is perhaps a bridge too far.

Owen’s full best teammate XI

One other player from Owen’s time at Anfield made the cut in a stacked lineup.

That was, of course, Steven Gerrard. He joins Paul Scholes and Zinedine Zidane in the middle of the park, with Wayne Rooney and Ronaldo Nazario ahead of them.
